Properties of Xenon

Xenon is a dense, colorless, odorless noble gas that occurs in trace amounts in the Earth's atmosphere. Although it is generally unreactive, it can undergo some chemical reactions, such as the formation of xenon hexafluoroplatinate, the first noble gas compound to be synthesized.

Applications of Xenon

  • Lighting
  • Anesthesia
  • Space technology research
  • Measurement of the longest radioactive decay on record

Case study Xenon

Radioactive waste from nuclear power plants can take a very long time to decay. For plutonium-239, the half-life, i.e. the time it takes for half of the atoms in a sample to decay, is around 24,000 years. But that is nothing compared to the half-life of the noble gas xenon-124, as an international team of researchers including staff from the University of Zurich has shown. The HAUG xenon compressor is used to extract the xenon gas from the system.
