Case Study
Compressors for Jet Assist on Aker Wayfarer
The Aker Wayfarer is an advanced multipurpose offshore construction vessel capable of performing subsea installations, floater installations, topside floatovers and deconstruction work. The 156.9 m vessel has minimal exhaust emissions due to its low fuel consumption. Sustainable features include optimized energy management, exhaust catalysts and low-emission diesel engines.
Compressed air is required here in addition to providing starting air for the Jet Assist system: During the engine start-up phase at startup, but also during use of the static positioning system "Dynamic Positioning System" (DPS), air is provided for the turbocharger to reach the desired speed as quickly as possible. The additional air for the turbocharger also ensures optimum combustion and high engine efficiency during the start-up phase, as the so-called "turbo lag" is avoided.
SAUER compressors ensure a reduced emission signature as well as optimal load absorption of the ship's engine. The three-stage air-cooled compressor of the Passat series is characterized by simple installation, low operating temperatures and low maintenance requirements.
