Properties of Toluene

Toluene is a substituted aromatic hydrocarbon with the chemical formula C6H5CH3, often abbreviated as PhCH3, where Ph stands for the phenyl group. It is a colorless, water-insoluble liquid with the odor of paint thinner.

Applications of Toluene gas

Toluene is primarily used as an industrial raw material and solvent.

As a solvent in some types of paint thinners, permanent markers, contact cements, and certain types of adhesives, toluene can cause severe neurological damage.

Case study Toluene

During production at a chemical company, a gas mixture consisting of butane, toluene, and nitrogen is produced as waste material. Butane and toluene are separated from nitrogen in a gas separation plant. The separation is carried out using a pressure/condensation process.

For exhaust gas treatment, nitrogen is sucked in with butane/toluene at atmospheric suction pressure and compressed to approximately 3 bar. The volume flow of two compressors is 500 Nm3/h.
