Behind the awkward name “Technetium-99m” lies the most frequently used medical radioisotope. The isotope is used as a contrast medium in millions of diagnostic procedures in nuclear medicine every year. But the supply situation is dramatic. Technetium-99m is only produced in a very small number of nuclear reactors worldwide, and some of them will even be decommissioned soon.
